Algur H. Meadows (1899-1978) was born in Vidalia, Georgia (USA). After completing his studies, he began his professional career with the Standard Oil Company in Louisiana. Later, together with his friends Henry W. Peters, Eric Woods and Ralph G. Trippett, he founded the General Finance Company, a company dedicated to loans. Subsequently, some of them partnered with J.W. Gilliland to create the General American Oil Company, an oil company (Roglán, 2012).
Meadows made numerous business trips to different countries, including Spain. During his stays in Madrid he used to visit the Museo Nacional del Prado and it was in the capital where he began to acquire numerous works of art (Roglán, 2012). His passion for collecting made him buy very outstanding pieces throughout his life. Although in 1965 it was discovered that some of the pieces in his collection were forgeries, Meadows did not abandon his passion for art and continued to acquire works (Dotseth, 2008). After his death, he bequeathed his collection to the Meadows Museum, an institution that he himself had financed and that today houses his legacy.
