Description

On July 21, 1221, after demolishing the old Romanesque cathedral, the first stone of the cathedral of Burgos was laid. This project was undertaken by order of King Ferdinand III and Bishop Mauricio and was directed by Master Enrique. From the beginning, the Gothic style from France was adopted, making it one of the first Gothic cathedrals in the Iberian Peninsula. The initial works were focused on the chevet, the transept and the first naves. Thus, by 1260, services were already being held at the main altar. During the 14th and 15th centuries the side chapels, the dome of the transept and the spires of the towers were added, which were designed by Juan and Simón de Colonia. Inside, the golden staircase by Diego de Siloé, the funerary chapels of Bishops Alonso de Cartagena and Luis de Acuña and the chapel of the Constables of Castile (Pedro Fernández de Velasco and Mencía de Mendoza) stand out.
