Description

In 1866, a group of Americans in Paris set out to create an institution dedicated to art with the aim of promoting and bringing art closer to the American people. John Jay, who suggested the idea, summoned magnates, artists, collectors and philanthropists to present his project. Thus, on April 13, 1870, the Metropolitan Museum of Artwas established at 681 Fifth Avenue. During the following years, pieces from different places, typologies and styles were added to the museum: Roman sarcophagi, weapons, textiles, Renaissance, Baroque and Impressionist paintings, etc. Finally, on March 30, 1880, the museum opened its doors to the public. Today the Metropolitan Museum of Art houses a large number of pieces from Castilla y León, such as the choir grille from the cathedral of Valladolid, some panels from the Polyptych of Isabella the Catholic, the Adoration of the Magi from the convent of Santa Clara de Medina de Pomar (Burgos), an apostle by Gil de Siloé that was originally in the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Fresdelval (Burgos) or textile fragments from the tomb of the Infante Don Felipe from Villalcázar de Sirga (Palencia), among many other pieces.
